OWNER’S VOICE — the framing
Class: SCRIPTURE RECORD. The scattering followed the whoring after other gods. This is not a gloss laid on the text afterward; it is the text’s own stated cause, in its own word — whoredom — spoken by Hosea before the fall and written into the verdict chapter, 2 Kings 17, after it. Because it is the Scripture’s own stated cause, the owner’s framing stands at the head of this class classed SCRIPTURE RECORD. The owner’s ruling on the whole commission: “That’s the important part of history.”
Method and classes
Every claim in this reading carries one class, and no claim is carried higher than its class: DOCUMENTED — the primary, inscriptional, archaeological, or published scientific record. SCRIPTURE RECORD — what the biblical and apocryphal text itself says. TRADITION — later Jewish, Christian, or national tradition: real as a tradition, carried as a tradition. DEBATED — positions named on both sides; the reading does not pick a winner. CLAIM — asserted without warrant at the standard above. DOCUMENTED-SCIENCE — the published scientific record, where that precision is needed. Conflicts are printed on both sides, never silently resolved. No identification of any modern people with a tribe is asserted beyond its evidence class.
PART I — THE SCATTERING IN THE RECORD
§1. The cause and the fall, as the Scripture states them
The charge. SCRIPTURE RECORD. Hosea, prophesying to the northern kingdom before its fall, opens with the word the owner quoted: “the land hath committed great whoredom, departing from the LORD” (Hosea 1:2). The charge is worked through the whole book: “they have gone a whoring from under their God” (Hosea 4:12); “Rejoice not, O Israel… for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God” (Hosea 9:1); and the sentence on the kingdom’s future: “My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations” (Hosea 9:17).
The verdict chapter. SCRIPTURE RECORD. 2 Kings 17 is the Scripture’s own post-mortem on the northern kingdom, and it states the cause before it states the event. Israel “had sinned against the LORD their God” (v. 7), “feared other gods” (v. 7), built high places, served idols (v. 12), burned incense to Baal, made a molten calf, worshipped “all the host of heaven” (vv. 16–17), and “rejected his statutes, and his covenant” (v. 15). The verdict is stated in terms: “Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only” (v. 18); “so was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day” (v. 23).
The fall. SCRIPTURE RECORD, corroborated in its outline by DOCUMENTED record (§2). “Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes” (2 Kings 17:5–6). Samaria was besieged three years and taken in 722 BC; the deportees were placed “in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.” The Scripture names “the king of Assyria” without distinguishing the besieger from the finisher: Shalmaneser V conducted the siege; Sargon II, who took the throne as the siege ended, claimed the capture and the deportation as his own. Which king finished Samaria is classed DEBATED in detail — Shalmaneser V besieger vs Sargon II finisher, both printed; the Babylonian Chronicle tradition and Sargon’s inscriptions do not tell it identically.
The scattering did not begin in 722. SCRIPTURE RECORD + DOCUMENTED. A decade earlier, Tiglath-Pileser III took the north piecemeal in the first wave, 734–732 BC: “in the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria, and took Ijon, and Abel-beth-maachah… and Kedesh, and Hazor, and Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and carried them captive to Assyria” (2 Kings 15:29). First Chronicles 5:26 names the Transjordan tribes — Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh — carried “unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, to this day.”
§2. The Assyrian record at first hand
The conqueror’s own count. DOCUMENTED. Sargon II’s Khorsabad Annals state: “I besieged and conquered Samaria. I led away as booty 27,290 inhabitants of it.” The Display Inscription’s copies show a variant figure, 27,280 — the two readings are printed side by side here and not harmonised. The figure counts Samaria’s final operation only — the deportees from Samaria and its region in that operation — not the northern kingdom’s whole population, not the earlier 730s deportations, and not those who fled south or remained.
The scale of the machine. DOCUMENTED. Bustenay Oded’s tally of the surviving Assyrian royal inscriptions counts 157 recorded deportations; the 43 that carry numbers sum to 1,210,928 deportees — the DOCUMENTED floor. Oded’s extrapolation across the unnumbered operations reaches some ~4.4 million — the extrapolation is an estimate, printed as one. Deportees in Assyrian law were “counted as Assyrian people” — settled, taxed, conscripted, set to farming and building — the dissolving mechanism: the system was designed to dissolve peoples into the empire.
The geography. Habor, by the river of Gozan — the Khabur river and Guzana at its headwaters: DOCUMENTED. The cities of the Medes — western Media: DOCUMENTED as geography; the sequencing DEBATED in detail, for deportees could only be settled in Media after Sargon’s Median campaigns of c. 716 BC, so the Medes destination belongs to the years after the city’s fall. Halah — named in both 2 Kings 17:6 and 1 Chronicles 5:26, not securely located; its position is carried as DEBATED and is not filled in.
The two-way transfer. SCRIPTURE RECORD, with the transfer policy DOCUMENTED on both sides. “And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel” (2 Kings 17:24). Sargon’s inscriptions independently record settling conquered peoples — including Arab tribes — in Samaria: the transfer policy itself is DOCUMENTED on both sides of the record.
§3. Judah’s scattering — and the remnant that returned
DOCUMENTED in outline, SCRIPTURE RECORD in text. Nebuchadnezzar took Jerusalem in 597 BC — the first deportation, including King Jehoiachin and Ezekiel — and destroyed the city and Temple in 586 BC, carrying Judah to Babylon (2 Kings 24–25; Jeremiah 52). The Babylonian administrative tablets — the Al-Yahudu corpus — document a Judean exile community living, contracting, and holding Yahwistic names in the Babylonian countryside: DOCUMENTED at first hand.
The return was real, and it was partial. DOCUMENTED + SCRIPTURE RECORD. Cyrus of Persia issued the decree of return (Ezra 1; 6 — SCRIPTURE RECORD); his general policy of restoring peoples and cults is inscribed on the Cyrus Cylinder — DOCUMENTED as policy, with the precision that the cylinder does not name Judah. Under Ezra and Nehemiah a community — the text’s own word for it is a remnant — rebuilt Jerusalem and the Temple. But the majority of the Babylonian community did not return: Babylonian Jewry remained a great centre for a thousand years and more, producing in time the Babylonian Talmud — DOCUMENTED. The Jewish military colony at Elephantine in Egypt, with its own temple, stands in the Aramaic papyri of the 5th century BC — DOCUMENTED. The asymmetry is stated plainly: Judah’s dispersion has a documented partial return; the north’s has no recorded return at all.
§4. What became of the northern deportees — in the record
A named deportee, in a held text. SCRIPTURE RECORD (Tobit, held RNJB witness). “The book of the story of Tobit son of Tobiel… of the lineage of Asiel and tribe of Naphtali. In the days of Shalmaneser king of Assyria, he was exiled from Thisbe…” (Tobit 1:1–2, held RNJB witness). Tobit gives alms “to my brothers and fellow country-folk, exiled like me to Nineveh in the country of Assyria” (1:3). The book presents a Naphtali deportee in Nineveh still keeping the commandments — a literary witness, classed as the text it is: SCRIPTURE RECORD.
Those who were never deported. DOCUMENTED + DEBATED. Archaeological survey of the Samaria hills shows settlement continuing after 722 under Assyrian provincial rule, and 2 Chronicles 30 records Hezekiah’s invitation to the remnant of the northern tribes to Passover in Jerusalem, with some coming (SCRIPTURE RECORD). How much of the northern population remained is DEBATED — the proportion remaining is carried as a range, both ends printed: from “the elite and urban population taken, the bulk remaining” to “whole districts stripped.”
The Samaritans — three accounts side by side, not reconciled. (1) SCRIPTURE RECORD: 2 Kings 17:24–41 presents the land’s new population as foreign settlers who, plagued by lions, received back an exiled Israelite priest to teach them “the manner of the God of the land,” and who ended by fearing the LORD and serving their carved images — the origin of the Samaritans as the text presents it. (2) TRADITION — the Samaritan community’s own tradition: descent from the tribes of Joseph — Ephraim and Manasseh — who were never carried away, keeping its own Torah (the Samaritan Pentateuch) and its own mountain, Gerizim. (3) DOCUMENTED-SCIENCE: modern genetics (Shen et al., 2004, and successors) found the tiny surviving Samaritan community’s paternal lineages close to Jewish priestly lines and consistent with Israelite descent, its maternal lines more local — a substantial Israelite element survived in the land. Some 800 Samaritans live today. The three accounts are not reconciled here; they stand as they stand.
The apocryphal answer: Arsareth. SCRIPTURE RECORD — quoted from the standard text; the Collection’s held witness does not contain this chapter.
“Those are the ten tribes, which were carried away prisoners out of their own land in the time of Osea the king, whom Salmanasar the king of Assyria led away captive, and he carried them over the waters, and so came they into another land. But they took this counsel among themselves, that they would leave the multitude of the heathen, and go forth into a further country, where never mankind dwelt, that they might there keep their statutes, which they never kept in their own land. And they entered into Euphrates by the narrow places of the river. For the most High then shewed signs for them, and held still the flood, till they were passed over. For through that country there was a great way to go, namely, of a year and a half: and the same region is called Arsareth. Then dwelt they there until the latter time…” (2 Esdras 13:40–46, standard text, KJV Apocrypha)
Classed exactly: the passage is SCRIPTURE RECORD of what the apocryphal text says; as a map of where the tribes went, it is the tradition’s fountainhead, not a documentary source, and no place on earth has been identified as Arsareth at any standard. Arsareth itself is generally explained by scholars as a coinage from the Hebrew ’eretz aheret, “another land.”
THE HELD GAP, STATED PLAINLY. The Collection’s own Encyclopedia witness holds 2 Esdras only in part: the spreads held carry 1:1–9:21 and 15:34–16:78. The interior, pp. 594–601 — 2 Esdras 9:22 through 15:33, including chapter 13 — was never photographed, so chapter 13 is quoted here from the standard text (KJV) and flagged: the chapter the whole search turns on is the chapter not yet held.
The first-century testimony. DOCUMENTED as a text; its figure classed as his. Josephus, writing c. AD 93, states: “the ten tribes are beyond Euphrates till now, and are an immense multitude, and not to be estimated by numbers” (Antiquities 11.5.2). Josephus is a real witness to what a learned Jerusalem priest of the first century held; his “immense multitude” is his figure, classed as his.
The river that rests. TRADITION. Rabbinic tradition placed the tribes beyond the Sambatyon, the river that rages with stones six days and rests on the Sabbath. The Babylonian Talmud (Sanhedrin 65b) sets the Sambatyon among the proofs of the Sabbath; Josephus and Pliny each mention a sabbatical river in Syria. The Sambatyon stands classed TRADITION.
Where the trail runs out. Stated plainly. After the Assyrian resettlement records, no contemporary documentary trail follows the northern deportees as a distinct people: no later inscription names them, no archive in Media or the Khabur lists an Israelite nation persisting. The trail ends in Assyria and Media, where 2 Kings 17:6 put them. The silence is a fact of the record, not filled in this reading with any people’s name.
§5. The later identifications — each at its exact class, and no higher
The Scythians and Cimmerians. Overlap DOCUMENTED; identification CLAIM. In the very decades of the deportations, Assyrian texts place the Gimirri (Cimmerians) and the Ishkuza (Scythians) in and around Media and the Zagros, and Herodotus tells how the Scythians drove the Cimmerians before them. The overlap of time and place with the deportees’ settlement zone is real and DOCUMENTED. The equation of either people with the deported Israelites has no inscriptional, archaeological, or ancient literary warrant; it is a later construction — the load-bearing beam of British-Israelism — and is classed CLAIM.
The Khazars. A Judaizing court DOCUMENTED; depth DEBATED; tribal descent CLAIM. The medieval Khazar khaganate is reported by several independent source families to have seen its royalty and nobility adopt Judaism in the late 8th or early 9th century — a Judaizing court DOCUMENTED at the level of multiple attestation. How deep the conversion ran is DEBATED: the mainstream position holds it centred on the ruling class; Shaul Stampfer’s examination (2014) argues the conversion itself lacks reliable contemporary evidence — his dissent is printed as the debate’s far side. The Khazars were a Turkic people’s kingdom that adopted Israel’s faith; Arthur Koestler’s thesis (The Thirteenth Tribe, 1976) that Ashkenazi Jewry descends mainly from Khazar converts has been tested genetically and found unsupported (Behar et al., 2013; Costa et al., 2013 — no required Khazar signal). Khazar tribal descent is classed CLAIM.
Beta Israel of Ethiopia. Community DOCUMENTED; Danite descent TRADITION; genetics DOCUMENTED-SCIENCE. The Beta Israel are a real, documented community of the Ethiopian highlands, recognised as Jews by Israel’s Chief Rabbinate in 1975 and brought to Israel in the airlifts of 1984 (Operation Moses) and 1991 (Operation Solomon) — all DOCUMENTED. Their own tradition makes them the tribe of Dan — classed TRADITION, carried as the community’s own account of itself. Genome-wide studies find the Beta Israel indistinguishable from their neighbouring Ethiopian populations — DOCUMENTED-SCIENCE — which the studies themselves note does not exclude small, undetected founder gene flow. The tradition and the genes answer different questions and are filed side by side.
The Pashtun Bani-Israel tradition. TRADITION; the descent CLAIM. Pashtun genealogical tradition traces the Pashtuns to a descendant of King Saul’s house, and the people’s own name for the claim is Bani Israel — Children of Israel. The tradition is real and documented as a tradition: TRADITION. No historical, archaeological, or genetic evidence at standard connects the Pashtuns to the deportees of 722 BC: the descent is classed CLAIM.
The long search: DOCUMENTED as a history of searching. The search itself is a documented centuries-long enterprise: Eldad ha-Dani (c. 880s), claiming to come from an independent tribe of Dan beyond the rivers of Cush; Benjamin of Tudela (c. 1165–1173), reporting powerful independent Jewish tribes in Arabia and the east; the Prester John letters (12th c.), whose kingdom enclosed the tribes in its geography; the messianic movements — Reubeni and Molcho (16th c.), the Sabbatai Zevi upheaval (1666); Menasseh ben Israel, whose Hope of Israel (1650) took up Antonio de Montezinos’s 1644 report of Israelites in the South American Andes and carried the search into his petition to Cromwell. Each station is DOCUMENTED as an event in the search; each reported sighting is classed CLAIM.
The Americas identifications. CLAIM, with their authors named. Gregorio García, Origen de los Indios (1607); Thomas Thorowgood, Jewes in America (1650); James Adair, History of the American Indians (1775); Elias Boudinot, A Star in the West (1816); Ethan Smith, View of the Hebrews (1823/1825). The Book of Mormon (1830) presents its own account of Israelite migrations to the Americas; it is a 19th-century American religious text and its migration account is classed with the claims. The whole identification family is CLAIM: it rests on resemblance-hunting and collapses on the documented record — the peopling of the Americas from north-east Asia more than 15,000 years ago is among the best-documented findings of modern archaeogenetics.
British-Israelism. Classed CLAIM. The theory that the peoples of Britain descend from the ten tribes was systematised by John Wilson, Lectures on Our Israelitish Origin (1840), drawing on Richard Brothers (1794), and popularised by Edward Hine (1878). Its machinery is shown so it can be seen: the tribes became the Cimmerians, then the Scythians — Sacae read as “Isaac,” hence Sac’s sons, hence the Saxons; the tribe of Dan left its name along the road — the Danube, Denmark, Dundee; “British” read as berith-ish, covenant-man. Every link in the chain is folk etymology or assertion; no documentary, archaeological, linguistic, or genetic evidence at standard supports any part of it. Classed CLAIM — historically influential, and carried here as an exhibit in the history of the search, not as a finding.
Other claimants, at the same standard. The Lemba of southern Africa hold an oral tradition of Jewish origin — tradition DOCUMENTED as held, the genetic link DEBATED. The Bnei Menashe of north-east India claim the tribe of Manasseh — TRADITION/CLAIM. The Igbo of Nigeria, the Bene Ephraim of India, the Rastafari and Black Hebrew Israelite movements’ identifications stand classed CLAIM/TRADITION at the same standard — each a living community’s own claim, none asserted here.
The genetics, stated once for the whole §. DOCUMENTED-SCIENCE. Genome-wide studies of Jewish diaspora communities find them sharing substantial Middle Eastern ancestry with each other and with Levantine populations, overlaid with local admixture — the documented genetic signature of the documented dispersion (Babylon, the Mediterranean, Europe). For the ten tribes specifically, genetics has nothing to show, and the reading says so plainly.
PART II — THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF EUROPE AND THE UNITED KINGDOM
Answered at the same standard as Part I, with the census law kept throughout: REPLACEMENT, ABSORPTION, and SURVIVAL are three different endings, and no people is filed under a grimmer one than its record supports.
§6. Britain before the names we know
The first replacement. DOCUMENTED-SCIENCE — census class: REPLACED. Britain’s Neolithic farming people carried ancestry drawn from the early farmers of Europe. After c. 2450 BC, people associated with the Beaker phenomenon crossed from the continent, and within a few centuries some 90% of Britain’s ancestry was replaced — Olalde et al., Nature 2018, printed at the study’s own precision: gene pool, not a counted death toll. The mechanism — violence, disease, exclusion, sheer numbers — is not resolved by the DNA and is not asserted here. Census class: Neolithic Britons REPLACED in ancestry.
The second wave. DOCUMENTED-SCIENCE. Patterson et al. (Nature, 2022) found that during the Middle to Late Bronze Age — with the sharpest movement between c. 1000–875 BC — migrants genetically closest to ancient populations of France entered southern Britain in numbers sufficient to contribute about half the ancestry of Iron Age people in England and Wales; Scotland did not receive the same influx. The study names this stream “a plausible vector for the spread of early Celtic languages into Britain.”
§7. The peoples the written record meets
The Britons, and the word “Celt.” Languages DOCUMENTED; the ethnic label DEBATED. When Rome’s writers reach Britain they meet peoples speaking Brittonic — ancestral to Welsh, Cornish, and Breton — across the island south of the Highlands, with Gaelic in Ireland and spreading into western Scotland. That these languages belong to the Celtic family is DOCUMENTED linguistics. That the island’s inhabitants were “Celts” is harder: ancient authors never used Keltoi for the people of Britain or Ireland; the extension of “Celt” to the islands is an early-modern scholarly construction (Edward Lhuyd, 1707), and historians of the Collis/James school argue the ethnic label misleads — DEBATED. The peoples themselves are not in doubt; the modern filing label is.
The Picts. Census class: ABSORBED. Their language’s nature DEBATED. The Picts held eastern and northern Scotland through the Roman centuries unconquered. Their ending came not by extermination but by union and Gaelicisation: from the reign of Domnall mac Causantín (889–900) outsiders name the realm the kingdom of Alba rather than of the Picts; by the 11th–12th century the inhabitants of Alba were fully Gaelicised. No massacre, expulsion, or replacement of the Pictish population stands in any record; Pictish-period burials, when genetically sampled (Morez et al., 2023), show a local population in long continuity. The language’s nature is DEBATED, both sides printed: the older view that Pictish was (or included) a non-Indo-European survival; against it, Katherine Forsyth’s prevailing case that the attested names and inscriptions show a Brittonic Celtic language — Pictish, or “Pritenic.”
The Anglo-Saxon settlement. Census class: ABSORPTION under heavy migration. Mechanism DEBATED. Ancient DNA has settled the shape of the adventus Saxonum. Gretzinger et al. (Nature, 2022) found large-scale migration of whole families across the North Sea: early medieval individuals in eastern England derived up to 76% of their ancestry from the continental North Sea zone, with documented intermarriage — individuals of 100% local ancestry buried in the same cemeteries, mixed-ancestry families. Present-day English ancestry carries the continental component at 25–47%. The old “wipeout” form is superseded: the Britons of the east were neither exterminated nor untouched — Brittonic vanished from the lowlands while their descendants persisted in large part inside the English population. Classed ABSORPTION under heavy migration, the mechanism community by community still DEBATED.
The survivals. Census class: SURVIVING. The Welsh: the language, pressed for centuries, counts over half a million speakers (2021 census: 17.8% of Wales) and stands official in its own country — SURVIVING. The Cornish: the language died as a community vernacular in the 18th century (the tradition names Dolly Pentreath, d. 1777, as its last fluent speaker) and has been revived from texts by its own people — UNESCO no longer lists it as extinct — SURVIVING. The Bretons, descendants of Britons who crossed to Armorica in the 5th–6th centuries: the Breton language stands severely endangered — the people SURVIVING.
Ireland. Census class: SURVIVING — dispossession inside a surviving people. In the written era no invasion exterminated or replaced Ireland’s people. The hardest chapter — the plantations and the Cromwellian settlement — confiscated the land on a national scale: Catholic landholding fell from 59% in 1641 to 22% by 1688, and lower after, while the people themselves remained. Land taken, language pressed: filed as dispossession and cultural assault inside a SURVIVING people. The plantation machinery’s detail is cross-referenced to the strand’s colonial record and is not reduplicated here.
§8. Continental Europe’s first peoples
The Basques — the guard case. Census class: SURVIVING. In the western Pyrenees stands the one certain survivor of pre-Indo-European Europe: Basque (Euskara), a language isolate, whose only established relative is the Aquitanian of Roman-era inscriptions — names like Nescato and Cison, transparently Basque neskato (“girl”) and gizon (“man”). The Basque people were never deported, exterminated, or absorbed: Franco banned their language from public life (1937–1975, DOCUMENTED), and some ~750,000 people speak Euskara today. The Basques are Europe’s standing proof that “first people” and “gone” are not synonyms — the guard case.
The Etruscans. Census class: ABSORBED. The Etruscans — a literate, city-building civilisation older than Rome, speaking a non-Indo-European language — were conquered city by city (Veii 396 BC; Volsinii 264 BC) and absorbed into the Roman state, their language dwindling under Latin to extinction in the late 1st century BC / early 1st century AD. Ancient DNA (Posth et al., 2021) found Etruscans genetically indistinguishable from their Latin neighbours — blood local, language the survival: a pre-Indo-European tongue that died only under Rome. Absorbed, not exterminated.
Iberians, Aquitanians, Ligurians. Census class: ABSORBED. The Iberians left a script only partly deciphered and a language extinct by about the 1st–2nd century AD under Latin; the people became Roman Spain. The Aquitanians are the Basques’ other half: south of the Garonne their language lived on into Basque; north of it, they were absorbed into Roman Gaul. The Ligurians are barely attested in their own words and were absorbed by Celts, Greeks, and Rome in turn. In each case: the language and the polity die; the people, in the main, do not — they are renamed.
Sardinia’s Nuragic record. Census class: ABSORBED, with a genetic footnote. The Nuragic civilisation passed under Carthage and then Rome (238 BC) and was absorbed over centuries. Modern Sardinians carry among the highest proportions of early European farmer ancestry in Europe (DOCUMENTED-SCIENCE) — the people, substantially, are still there; the nuraghi still stand; the Nuragic language is gone beyond recovery.
The Sámi are carried in the World Extermination Census (item 33) and are cross-referenced there, not reduplicated here.
Rome’s destruction of peoples in Europe — the exceptions that mark the rule. Rome in Europe generally absorbed; where the record supports destruction it is named. The Dacians are cross-referenced to the Rome file §1.4, not reduplicated. Numantia (133 BC) and the Cantabrian wars (29–19 BC) stand in the Roman record — sieges and enslavements of peoples whose descendants nonetheless persist in Spain’s population. Even Rome’s hardest European cases end, at the population level, in absorption with losses — a different ledger from the Americas census.
§9. THE JOIN — did the scattered tribes become peoples of Europe?
The owner’s two questions join here, and the join is answered at its exact level, in three sentences that must not be merged:
1. No documentary, inscriptional, archaeological, linguistic, or genetic record at standard identifies any European people as the tribes of Israel. The identifications that exist are filed in §5 at their classes — TRADITION and CLAIM — and none of them rises higher on the evidence that survives.
2. The tribes’ trail in the contemporary record ends where 2 Kings 17:6 left it — in Assyria and Media. Everything past that point, in every direction, is search, tradition, claim, and hope. The search has not produced the tribes.
3. The Scripture’s own answer to the dispersion is not a map but a promise, and it stands in the record as SCRIPTURE RECORD, quoted from the Collection’s held working texts:
“And it shall come to pass in that day, that [the LORD] shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” (Isaiah 11:11–12)
“Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth… a great company shall return thither.” (Jeremiah 31:8)
“…which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.” (Jeremiah 23:8)
“And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all.” (Ezekiel 37:22 — the two sticks)
Note the order in Isaiah’s list: the return is promised from Assyria first — from the very address of the deportation. The reading closes at the research file’s exact level: unproven in the documents, unextinguished in the text.
§10. Owed list — the gaps, named, not filled, in brief
1. 2 Esdras pp. 594–601 first debt — 2 Esdras 9:22–15:33 in the owner’s own witness; the interior spreads were never photographed, and chapter 13 (Arsareth) therefore stands quoted from the standard text. Four spreads close the gap; nothing else substitutes for them. 2. Halah — the deportation geography’s one unlocated name; carried DEBATED, owed a secure identification if scholarship produces one. 3. The proportion remaining — the DEBATED range of §4; carried as a range meanwhile. 4. A post-resettlement documentary trace — none exists in the known record; owed permanently unless new archives surface; the absence is filed as a fact. 5. Pictish, settled — carried DEBATED. 6. The Beaker mechanism — ~90% ancestry replacement is documented; how it happened is not; owed to future work, not asserted in the interim.
Register — for the teacher’s desk: the documented spine and the census
The dispersion’s documented spine: whoring charged (Hosea; 2 Kings 17) → first deportations 734–732 (Naphtali, Galilee, Transjordan) → Samaria falls 722, Sargon’s inscribed count 27,290 → deportees to the Khabur/Gozan and, after 716, Media → foreigners settled in Samaria in their place → Judah falls 597/586, Babylon → a remnant returns under Ezra/Nehemiah; the Babylonian community and the wider diaspora (Elephantine documented) remain → the north does not return, and its contemporary trail ends in Assyria/Media → Josephus (c. AD 93): the ten tribes beyond Euphrates, “an immense multitude” — his testimony → 2 Esdras 13: Arsareth — the tradition’s fountainhead → two thousand years of search (§5), no identification at standard → the promise stands in the text (Isaiah 11; Jeremiah 23, 31; Ezekiel 37).
Europe and the United Kingdom, per people: Neolithic Britons — REPLACED in ancestry (~90%, c. 2450 BC onward), mechanism unknown · Iron Age southern Britain — half its ancestry renewed from France (c. 1000–875 BC), the likely road of the Celtic languages · Picts — ABSORBED (polity and language into Alba by c. 1100; the people continuous) · Britons of the lowland east — ABSORBED under heavy Anglo-Saxon migration (up to 76% continental ancestry in the early medieval east; language lost, descendants persistent) · Welsh, Cornish, Bretons — SURVIVING peoples, languages pressed; Cornish revived · Ireland — people SURVIVING; land confiscated nationally in the plantation centuries; language pressed · Basques — SURVIVING, the guard case; language unbroken from Aquitanian · Etruscans, Iberians, Aquitanians (north), Ligurians, Nuragic Sardinians — ABSORBED under Rome; languages gone, peoples renamed, not exterminated · Sámi — SURVIVING (census item 33) · Dacians — conquered and Romanised (Rome file §1.4).
Cross-references, not reduplicated: Sámi and Greenland → World Extermination Census §6 · Dacia → Rome research file §1.4 · Ireland’s plantation machinery → Genocide Record INDEX / colonialism supplement · the Americas’ peopling → the strand’s Arrival research · the Book in Rome’s hands → Rome research file §2.
Record: research file — TRACKING_THE_DISPERSION.md (study_materials/dispersion_2026-10-28/) — The scattering of the twelve tribes, and what happened to the Indigenous peoples of Europe and the United Kingdom. DRAFT for the owner’s approval; cultural review pending; nothing deployed.
